"Elfland" grew from a visit to North Berwick, a town in the border region of Scotland. The craggy rocks and hills of Scotland and Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia are strikingly similar. They were once part of Laurentia, an ancient continent which lasted from the Precambrian to the Siluran eras, about 550 - 450 million years ago.
